Presentation Description: This presentation will provide a high-level review of the common short-circuit protection circuits and how they work. It will afterwards dive into the DESAT circuit, how it operated and how fast it can be made using commercially available gate driver ICs. During the DESAT circuit dive, we will go also over how the circuit can be improved, made faster but also more robust against fast triggering even with SiC MOSFETs and < 1 μs protection times. Lastly the most common disadvantages and short-falls will be discussed and shown. The end goal is to help engineers understand the DESAT circuit, how versatile it is, identify ways of making it faster, while keeping it robust and noise immune.
