This work develops a generalized analytical framework to demystify the current and voltage self-balancing in multiphase hybrid converters. Firstly, a generalized criterion is explored to identify the self-balance in steady-state. Furthermore, the normalized dynamic equations of balancing errors are derived, which reveal the coupled damping effect among phases. Finally, by doing Laplace transform on the dynamic equations, the intrinsic feedback model is established that reveals the convergence speed and stability of the self-balancing process. With consideration of I2R loss, small inductance, small parasitic resistance and large flying capacitance are recommended for fast and stable self-balancing. With the proposed theory, a new topology with self-balance characteristic is predicted and analyzed. The validity and generality of the theory are verified with experiments.
